2007 -- Certified List of Organic L.I. Landscapers Released
The
Neighborhood Network released its annual list
of organic landscapers who serve Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
All the comapnies listed have met the Neighborhood Network's education
and training requirements, demonstrated knowledge of organic practices,
and signed a contract under which they agree to comply with an
organic standard and to operate transparently to ensure compliance.

-- Suffolk County Passes Non-Toxic Purchasing Law
Suffolk
County Legislature approved in an 18 to 0 vote a law championed
by environmentalists and breast cancer action advocates, to
eliminate carcinogens and other harmful substances from products
purchased by the County.

-- 8th Annual Organic Turf Trade Show most successful ever
This
year's ORGANIC TURF
TRADE SHOW, which featured twenty-five vendors of
100% natural horticulture products and services, and five speakers
running workshops and sharing their many years of expertise in
the field of organic care of lawns, athletic fields, and even
non-toxic indoor pest control, was attended by 250 participants.

to Town of Brookhaven Clean Energy Task Force
The
Brookhaven Clean Energy
Task Force is charged with reviewing of the Town's
energy efficiency and renewable energy efforts, and helping to
set the direction for new initiatives and policies to promote
wise energy use.

2007 -- Neighborhood Network Executive Director, Neal Lewis Named
to Suffolk Pesticide Alternatives Task Force
The
Suffolk
County Homestead A-Syst Task Force was created to
develop an informational program for Suffolk residents on the
risks associated with pesticide and fertilizer use, methods to
reduce these risks, and safer alternatives for maintaining lawns
and gardens. Hearing are being held to solicit input from the
public

December
2006 -- Oyster Bay and Riverhead adopt Energy Star Homes requirements
The
Towns of Brookhaven, Babylon, Riverhead, Oyster Bay, and Southampton
have all passed local laws requiring Energy
Star Homes standards for new home construction. More L.I.
Towns are expected to follow.

-- Nassau County to Use Non-Toxic Cleaning Products
By
executive order, Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi has instituted
a policy of using non-toxic
cleaning products at County facilities.

-- Election Day - Environmental Wins at Polls
Nassau
County voters overwhelmingly approved (77% to 23%) the $100 million
dollar bond act, to preserve
open space, improve parks, and protect water quality. Voters in
all five East End Town passed referenda extending the Community
Preservation Funds, which are funded by a tax on the sale of real
estate, have been very successful in preserving open space, farmland,
and the character of the East End.
